To save money, or perhaps have more flexibility, you can rent an airplane light-sport aircraft (LSA) from a local flight school or fixed-base operation (FBO).

However, not all flight schools or FBO’s have LSA’s yet. They are coming but it will take a while for LSA’s to be available everywhere.

You can also consider joining a flying club…they are often quite inexpensive yet usually offer more flexibility than traditional rental situations. Often clubs are chartered to not make a profit so the overhead is low.

It is not uncommon or it may be may be required to have pilot “renters insurance” if you are going to rent airplanes.

Use the Sport Pilot Locator to find a LSA rental facility, a flying club near you and insurance agents that can provide renters insurance.
